Rock & Rawhide aims to increase adoptions and quality of life for dogs and cats in shelters, by providing distraction therapy and noise/stress reduction through the donations of toys, tough chew item, Kong's, Nylabones, rawhides, bones, blankets and much more.

Rock & Rawhide was founded by Sean-Patrick and Kylie Hillman after attempting to find a sibling for their Bull Mastiff/American Staffy Mix, Snickers. "We went to Animal Care & Control to find Snickers a friend and quickly realized how loud it was in the shelter between the barking and meowing. We did not find Snickers a new sibling that day, but we did find a new cause."

Sean-Patrick and Kylie Hillman became concerned and bothered by their experience and together started researching and realized how noise levels do affect adoption rates. Based on numerous late nights on the computer, they found that if you can lower the noise levels, you could lower stress levels. Therefore, by providing distraction therapy, through the donation of toy and tough chew items, the animals would be able to show more personality and find a home quicker.

While researching and finding ways to becoming involved, the Hillmans adopted Rolo, a Pit bull/Labrador mix, from Animal Care & Control. Together, with Snickers and Rolo serving as their mascots, they decided to create Rock & Rawhide.

"The Rock part of the name come from both the fact that Kylie is a singer/songwriter and I have handled a number of concert tours and acts. The Rawhide part came in with the idea of distraction therapy for dogs," Sean-Patrick Hillman stated. "Our first collections of toys, rawhides and treats were at Kylie's gigs and we are now negotiating to have drop boxes on concert tours next summer!"

Like any organization or charity, there are main goals and objections that they hope to conquer. The goals of Rock and Rawhide are to wag tails and incite purrs in shelter animals waiting for their furrever home. Their hope is that through their awareness programming and collection drives; they help in increasing not only traffic to shelters, but also drive adoption rates to record levels.

Sean-Patrick and Kylie Hillman both grew up with animals their entire lives and missed having a furry friend in their home, which caused them to search out for their Snickers and Rolo. Snickers was in different shelters before they came across her, but once the Hillmans spotted her, they instantly knew that she was the one.

Rolo had a more complicated story, where his previous owner was arrested for running a dog fight ring causing him to pulled into Animal Care and Control by the NYPD. The Hillmans worked tirelessly through the rescue system to get him out and did not stop till he was a part of the family.

Snickers and Rolo are celebrities in their own right, especially within the Rock and Rawhide Charity. Sean-Patrick Hillman jokingly describes them as happy and funny dogs, but with different celebrity-like qualities. "I would picture Snickers as Claudia Schiffer because she's very passionate, has a great figure and walks like she's on the catwalk. Rolo would definitely be comedian Kevin Smith because he's a big boof headed funny and emotional little boy!"

Sean-Patrick is one of the owners of his family's PR Firm, Corbin-Hillman Communications, is an entrepreneur and former actor. Kylie works for Sean-Patrick's family's advertising agency, Hillman & Partner. While they cannot bring their dogs into work, they remain dedicated to Rock & Rawhide and continue to make as much of a difference as possible.

The mission statement says it all. "If a dog is chewing, it's not barking, if a cat is playing, it's not meowing! Less noise means less stress, which in turn; dogs and cats can show more of their personality and find the purrfect home. That is our mission at Rock & Rawhide."
