(18-07-2013) New York City’s Dog Eat Dog Mayoral Race! An1malPet5

New York City's Dog Eat Dog Mayoral Race! Jul 18th 2013, 16:00

Independent Candidate and Animal Advocate Jack Hidary enters the New York City Mayoral Race in a Bloomberg-style bid! The civic-minded technology executive, flush with connections from his corporate exploits, concludes that he is uniquely qualified to bark against other top dogs like Former Congressman Wiener dog Anthony Weiner, NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Former Chief of the MTA Joe Lhota and Owner of Gristedes Grocery Chain John Catsimatidis in this dog eat dog race for City Hall.

Animals are a huge part of our New York culture. To many New Yorkers, animals are just like children and they are certainly just as important. This upcoming mayoral election should focus on Animal Welfare issues from the promotion of kill free shelters, the ban on forcing horses into hauling carriages and to making declawing cats a thing of the past.

That’s why in May, NYCLASS hosted NYC’s first ever, Mayoral Forum of Animal Rights. Events like this one keep Animal Rights out of the background and in the spotlight as the hot issues of the election.

Most of the major mayoral candidates participated: Bill de Blasio, Bill Thompson, John Liu, Sal Albanese, Erick Salgado and John Catsimatidis. Since then, Anthony Weiner joined the race, seeking a bid for the Democratic nomination to run for mayor. He, like all the other candidates, need to keep Animal Welfare at the forefront of the debate — that’s why NYCLASS needs your help to keep animal rights as the issues that will decide this campaign.

Mayoral independent candidate Jack Hidary knows that animals are incredibly important to New Yorkers, with 8,000-10,000 animals euthanized in NYC alone, he is determined to making New York a no kill city. Along with being a no kill city, Hidary has expressed his protest forcing horses into hauling carriages, supporting NYCLASS. Current Mayor Michael Bloomberg and democratic candidate Christine Quinn support horse carriages, stating it is part of the New York City experience.

As of a recent poll done by Quinnipiac, Quinn, Weiner, Lhota and Catsimatidis are bone and bone with Quinn at 22% and Weiner at 25% rating for the democrats. Amongst the Republican candidates, Joe Lhota is at 28% and John Catsimatidis at 21% rating.

Even with the polls constantly changing in favor of different candidates, Jack Hidary shows no sign of concern in an interview with New York Times. "Mike Bloomberg, in the most recent election, ran as an independent and won as an independent. There is a clear message from the voters: they are not satisfied with the current set of choices," Hidary stated.

Hidary's odds seem to be long, but he is willing to open his own wallet for a run. Unlike Mr. Bloomberg, he intends to rely heavily on campaign donations, a highly regulated political ritual.

Any chance you get, ask the mayoral candidates where they stand on horse drawn carriages, AC&C animal shelter reform and other humane legislation.

NYCLASS (New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets) is a non-profit animal advocacy organization committed to ending the inhumane practices of the NYC carriage horse industry. NYCLASS advocates for retiring the carriage horses to sanctuary, while modernizing the current industry with a clean and safe alternative to this outdated tradition — the 21st Century Horseless Carriage. Founded in 2008 by a coalition of prominent animal lovers and business leaders, NYCLASS has grown to over 97,000 supporters with activist chapters in all five boroughs.
