What better way to bring veterans and animals together for a great cause other than cartoonist, author and songwriter Guy Gilchrist? Known for his imagination and great work, Gilchrist finds a way to combining colorful creativity with nonprofit causes.

Known as a one-man entertainment conglomerate, Guy Gilchrist has made his stamp in the world as an artist, author, musician, storyteller and teacher. He is known for being the brains behind the classic newspaper cartoon Nancy since 1995, with a following of millions in nearly 80 countries and 400 newspapers.

His appearances are personalized and crafted to combine his many talents, having thrilled students, young and old, members of civic clubs and worthwhile charities. Gilchrist is known for his charm, wit and down to earth appeal of his work.

Being apart of the Veteran tour, Guy Gilchrist proves to be a giving and proactive philanthropist in the animal community. “I work directly with Animal Rescue Corps, helping with the physical rescue aspect,” Gilchrist expressed. “I also work closely with New Lease On Life, and Retrieving Freedom in Memphis.

Gilchrist is known for Your Angels Speak, Night Lights, The Muppets and mostly for the comic strip Nancy, along with others. In 2010 to date, Guy Gilchrist writes and draws Nancy and Today’s Dogg, a panel launched on Facebook, and later appeared by comics.com, United Features’ website. Gilchrist is also recognized for writing 49 books and songs that he wrote and co-wrote for Suzy Bogguss, Glenn Douglas Tubb and Billy Swan.

Nancy is a daily and Sunday comic strip that Gilchrist took over in 1995. The sole mission of Nancy was to make people smile, according to Gilchrist. As a music lover living in the Nashville area, references to music are also part of the comic strip, while trying to pour as much of his re-life experience into the strip.

When asked the inspired behind the creation of Nancy, Gilchrist responded, “my pets!” Gilchrist currently has two dogs, Keeper, a mix of Shepard l, Burmese, mountain dog and Rottweiler, rescued from Robyn’s Nest Shelter in Lebanon. His second dog, Lucy, a Chihuahua mix, was discovered by his fiancĂ© Teresa.

“Lucy was left by a tenant, tied to a door. Keeper was named Keeper when I got him and he is definitely a Keeper,” Gilchrist said jokingly. “Lucy was named after Lucille Ball. ‘Lucy! I’m HOME!”

Nancy, the comic strip, represents a variety of pets. Nancy’s pets are all rescues, Poochie the dog, Rocky the cat and he has a fish too. Guy Gilchrist explains further, “the recent story arc, which is in papers right now, is about an animal rescue. Sluggo and Nancy save a dog that is tied to a tree and choking, left abandoned all day by his owner. The dog is later adopted by Phil, Fritzi’s boyfriend. Sluggo gets to help raise the dog and since he was freed on the 4th of July, the dog is named SAM, like Uncle Sam wearingan American Flag bandana.”

While apart of the country music world, it was fair to ask who Gilchrist’s animals would represent as country stars. “Lucy would have to be somebody tiny and feisty, like Brenda Lee or Martina, but only if they had a Spanish accent!” He comminuted, “Keeper is just a super friendly big guy like Trace Adkins.”

Guy Gilchrist loves animals and knows they can light up a room and make anyone happy while lighting up a room. This is why he is teaming up with Wendy Diamond to help promote K9 for Warriors in Nashville. All of the organizations he is apart of, Animal Rescue Corps, New Lease On Life and Retrieving Freedom in Memphis can be found on Facebook. Thank you again for being apart of tour to help Veterans!
