The scene is a familiar one: a dog approaches a hydrant, sniffs it, lifts his leg and … well you get the idea. While not exclusive to dogs, territorial marking is certainly one of the behaviors most commonly associated with them. The behavior usually consists of a dog depositing small traces of urine on a particular space, area, or object to claim ownership. It's also employed to express sexual availability and to establish hierarchy. Although both canine genders are capable of this behavior, female dogs tend to perform it to indicate mating status and without the leg lift.  After territorial marking occurs, the pheromones and other chemicals in the urine work to communicate the dog's age, gender, and social status to other canines. Dr. Nicholas Dodman notes that "these natural chemicals can be detected by members of the same species and will direct them to alter their behavior. The signal is akin to 'trespassers will be prosecuted.'" While most dogs will respect marked territory, some dogs will actually try to take it over by masking the scent with their own urine. Flying to the Moon, can we?  Since dogs mainly mark to make the claim of ownership, territorial marking could be easily viewed as just a need to display dominance. However, marking also occurs when a dog is distressed or anxious, usually due to an unexpected change in his home environment. For instance, if there's a new baby or a new pet in the home, a dog might respond to the unfamiliar intrusion through marking indoors, thereby reestablishing some familiarity and stability in his environment. Other situations that would likely elicit marking from anxiety include changes in routine and unfamiliar noises in the house. Owners usually don't view marking as a big deal when their pets do it on the surface of a tree or a fire hydrant. It quickly transforms into something of an issue though when a table leg or a door becomes the target of their pet's marking. Fortunately enough, treatment for this behavior is pretty straightforward; the most effective solution by far is to neuter or spay the dog. As Dodman observes, "Approximately 60% of 'altered' male dogs will cease urine marking within weeks or months of castration." Of course, this method works even better when the dog is young, since the marking pattern hasn't set in yet and the body's hormones and natural chemicals will be nipped in the bud early on. Still, some neutered dogs will persist in marking due to stress and anxiety. In that case, eliminate the sources of distress as best as possible; if a strange animal outside is freaking out your dog, shoo it away and keep other lurking strays away from your home. An alternative to neutering is to break the marking habit through vigilant supervision. If a dog begins to mark indoors, it should be quickly startled and interrupted. While this method takes a remarkable amount of time, patience and effort, it's probably the most effective way to break the territorial marking habit aside from neutering. However, if marking occurs due to the rough integration of a new pet into a household, simply resolving the conflict between the two pets might just do the trick.

You've heard the warnings, often issued concurrently with "wear your sunblock: If you notice anything suspicious on your skin, see your doctor," for indeed, many deaths could be prevented if diagnoses could be made earlier. Just as early diagnosis relies upon the patient to first notice something, current medical practice relies on astute visual detection by the physician frequently aided by a hand-held microscope, and as a result, melanomas are only diagnosed accurately, perhaps 65 percent of the time. That's a statistic that can, and should be improved upon, and the Walkers would eventually like to do just that by figuring out a better way to obtain information from the dog-to get it to talk to them in a clearer language-and to figure out "as best we can what are the chemical markers on which the dogs rely in the melanoma situation," adds Jim Walker. Their labors follow pioneering work in the canine olfaction realm initiated by Cognetta and friends. The doctor was first captivated by a radio news story he heard that described how dogs were being used to search for a body thought to be at a lake bottom. Prompted to investigate published medical reports, he came upon a 1989 Lancet (a British medical journal) story that further fired his curiosity. He read of a 44-year old woman whose dog persistently continued sniffing at a mole on her leg: the spot was ultimately diagnosed as malignant melanoma. Cognetta decided to undertake then-revolutionary research, and sought out dog expert and retired Tallahassee police officer Pickel as well as dog trainer Manucy. Other members of the research team included Pickel's dog George, a former bomb-sniffing standard schnauzer who ultimately proved his expertise as a diagnostician.  Manucy's golden retriever, Breeze, was also a major player in the scenario. Both pups' resumes read like  "Who's Who" of dogdom: George knew how to obey almost 130 hand signals, and had racked up 400 awards for obedience from the American Kennel Club (AKC). Breeze, too, had a roster of wins in obedience, agility and other pertinent categories, and was acknowledged to be "very intelligent." The two canines were also great with people. George, for example, who passed away at 10 in 2000, first learned to recognize cancer cells in a test or "retrieval" tube, then in a more complex set-up involving 10 holes in a large box. The dog exhibited a very high success rate. When he progressed to humans, where the cancer-ridden tissue samples were hidden under bandages, he was right 99 percent of the time. Walker clarifies:  "It is not possible to say that the dogs were keying in just on melanoma since they were trained mostly on a mixed tissue sample that was part basal cell cancer and part squamous cell and part melanoma." Very simply, in laymen's terms, George worked like this; the dog would sniff the patient, sit, lift his paw and basically place it on the tumor. In the end, he found skin cancer in four of the seven patients. True, he wasn't right in all cases, but his penchant for accuracy was encouraging that something noteworthy was happening here. Breeze would identify the troublesome area on the patient by putting her mouth gently on the suspected growth. Pickel, a big believer in canine capability, wasn't terribly surprised with the results, since he had made dogs his life's passion since he was 10 years old. Having served with the canine corps in Vietnam, Pickel trained under many of the top canine professionals in the world, and has overseen 17 top AKC champions. He was involved in bomb searches for the Reagan-Bush administration when the President and Vice President visited the Southeastern United States. "Dogs smell much better than the best man-made odor-detecting machines," Pickel personally believes. Dogs Make Scents Make Sense The Walkers have picked up the canine ball, so to speak, from the previous two-year efforts of Cognetta, Pickel and Manucy: the dermatologist is now fully returned to private practice. As the Walkers continue their canine olfactory exploration, they've attracted the interest and support of Brent Hoadley, another Ph.D. who specializes in plant and soil science. Now retired from academia, Hoadley runs a full-time dog kennel and volunteers the sniffing services of his Golden Retriever, Pat, to the Walker's scientific endeavors with Pickel. "I've known and respected Duane for 30 years," confides Hoadley "and I've watched him as he went through developing stringent standards. I've personally followed what's been done with dogs in detecting explosive mines and bombs; it's fascinating. I don't believe there's been a better piece of equipment invented than a dog's nose. " Hoadley, who says he's just "tagging along on this research," is enthused at the prospects that the four other canines, his included, "are going to prove how well a dog's nose can find a target." The challenge, Hoadley agrees, is that, realistically "not everybody accepts dogs: the patient has got to do that. The other piece of this is that it's going to require some very unique trainers. We need a better standard for training dogs and making sure there are trainers on the end of the lead who really know what's going on. They need to have the interest: I know these people are out there." The person is just one part of the equation: then there's the dog, acknowledges Hoadley. "Therapy and seeing-eye dogs have already proven themselves. Once we prove the dog is able to help mankind in this way, we'll need to develop a certification program so that both dog and trainer can do what they're expected to do. Remember, though, that not every dog is a good hunting dog, for example. Not every dog is ideal for police work; maybe they're not brave enough. Dogs trained for this purpose will have proven a special talent." Furthering the research for, and ultimately the training and implementation of cancer-sniffing dogs, depends on continued funding, acknowledges Hoadley. "If anyone has the interest and the money, it's needed now, for the training and the target; this won't go on if there's no money." The number of choices in this particular industry may possibly genuinely end up being countless. The closest living relatives of dinosaurs, birds and crocodilians, certainly make vocalizations, but the bird’s hoots and chirps and the crocodile’s throaty garglings are a far cry from what you hear in Jurassic Park. As far as we can tell, if the T. rex did make its own distinct vocalizations, it probably sounded nothing like the infamous movie roar.

Of course, the sound engineers in the film weren’t aiming to exactly reproduce the sounds of the cup rumbling T. rex. They didn’t have a 65 million year old phonograph to go by, so they created the tyrannosaurs screech by combining the yelps and yells of other living animals. Movie sound engineers have been cleverly combining various tones for years (don’t forget the famous Tarzan yell!). For example, sound designer Ben Burtt produced the famous Star Wars blaster noise by hitting a tightened steel cable with a wrench. And for Chewbacca’s guttural call he mixed together walrus, camel, and tiger noises. (You can even play sound engineer at home! Get a slinky and a microphone and you can easily recreate the Star Wars blaster sound.)

According to the bookThe Making of Jurassic Park: An Adventure 65 million Years in the Making, the T. rex roar from the film was a combination of a baby elephant’s squeal, an alligator’s gurgling, and a tiger’s snarl. Its breath was the sound of air escaping a whale’s blowhole. Drawing from these animals, you can almost hear the composite T. rex roar from the film. Indeed, amateurs have tried recreating the combination and the result is pretty convincing.

If any of the animals that made up the roar heard it, they would be confused, perhaps even intrigued.

The T. rex roar could be a call for a tiger to investigate, or attack. Scientists now think that their snarls are used to stun potential prey (and even their trainers). Tigers can produce sounds in a range lower than what humans can hear. These infrasonic sounds can rattle and paralyze prey. And if you record these sounds and play them back to tigers, they may even attack the audio speaker.

Elephants use infrasound too, but for communication instead of paralysis. Though “language” means something different for humans and elephants, the trumpeting trunks of the largest land animal have intrigued scientists for years. There are entire projects that simply sit in the African jungles and hit the record button hoping to learn more about elephant communication. The Elephant Listening Project is a non-profit almost entirely dedicated to studying the rumbling calls of elephants. For decades a team lead by naturalist Katy Payne has recorded elephants’ “silent thunder” and the context in which it occurs, hoping to decipher the complex context and social cues that are held within. (You can learn more about this fascinating work in this short documentary by 60 Minutes.)

The T. rex roar might even turn on an alligator. When they hit sexual maturity, alligators let out loud rumbles to attract females and warn other males. The vibrations from these displays are intense enough to shake the water above the gator like a Tibetan singing bowl. With a roar as loud as the T. rex’s in Jurassic Park, who knows how many female alligators would slink their way over.

Put it all together and you get that soul-shuddering sound. It will likely live on forever in YouTube clips and Internet soundboards because it is so unearthly, so bizarrely forceful. The T. rex roar wasn’t scientifically accurate, but it accomplished exactly what the sound engineers wanted. And experts like John R. Hutchinson agree that Jurassic Park’s T. rex is the best depiction of the animal to date, brought magnificently to life with colossal animatronics and CGI that was decades ahead of its time.

And Tyrannosaurus rex only gets cooler with scientific accuracy. New research has upgraded the bite force of its steak knife-filled mouth and (probably) given it feathers. Regardless if it could really scream as it does in the film, it still would be the scariest thing with feathers you have ever seen, lest you think feathers are too “cute” for the tyrant lizard. But sadly, Jurassic Park 4 has chosen not to give its dinos feathers, missing a wonderful chance to convey real science to a huge audience. To quote prolific dinosaur author and blogger Brian Switek: “A velociraptor without feathers isn’t a velociraptor.”

Her teammate, 15-year-old Maggie Owens, of Parkville, said she didn't think
the donation would mean so much to the Baltimore Humane Society.

But according to Wendy Goldblum, director of marketing and public relations
for the facility, the organization has no major benefactors.

"It's shocking we can survive on these little donations," Goldblum said.
"Five-dollar donations make all the difference in the world, so that $150
donation is a big deal."

The girls began their tour by meeting Randy, a two-year-old terrier/pit bull
mix who is in her second stint at the shelter in Reisterstown. From there,
they were treated to a history of the facility, which was founded by Elsie

According to Greenpeace, a Spanish-controlled “phantom fishing fleet,” affiliated to the Fleetwood Fish Producer Organisation (FFPO) but not seen by locals for over a decade, has been shipping millions of pounds worth of fish to Spain caught using quota allocated to Lancashire fishers.

 

"It’s deeply concerning that foreign boats in the crosshairs of a government clampdown on fish quota ‘abuse’ are represented by the industry’s most influential lobby group,” said Ariana Densham, Greenpeace oceans campaigner. “The NFFO has been sticking its head in the sand on the issue of its foreign-dominated fleet, but reality is catching up with their denial.”

 

Meanwhile, the NFFO said that even in the face of its repeated, public invitations, Greenpeace has rejected its offer to meet and discuss issues or qualify any of its claims.

 

"Greenpeace are set on creating a sensationalist media storm fuelled by inaccuracies and gross generalisation. This is wasting valuable time and effort better spent dealing with some of the critical issues at hand, including the impact of the common fisheries policy (CFP) reform, under-10s and long term management plans,” Barrie Deas, Chief Executive of the NFFO, said.

In 2012, the Fleetwood Fish Producer's Organisation contributed GBP 600,000 (EUR 711,000) worth of quota to meet its economic link obligations, which was mainly used to benefit under-10m fisheries. Also, the NFFO noted, the Anglo-Spanish vessels fish different species in different areas and therefore do not compete for quota with local fishers.
